This study explores the role of adult voice synthesis in children’s use of speech-generating devices (SGDs), examining whether children are experienced as communicating with the voice synthesis as an external tool or through it as an integrated communicative voice. The findings indicate that parents perceive the voice synthesis in their child’s SGD primarily as an external communication tool. The article argues that age-appropriate and expressive child voices may support more embodied human–technology relations within the care collective, enabling the voice synthesis to function as the child’s voice rather than the voice of the device.
