Humans are drawn to narratives in childhood as much as in adulthood. In our work we have used narratives as a tool to study the cognitive and neural basis of mental simulation. My talk will address two topics.
First I will show how we investigate mental simulation during narrative comprehension using empirical methods (e.g. eyetracking, fMRI).
Second I will show how we aim to get closer to understanding our first person experience of narratives, such as whether we like a narrative or not.
Learning objective
Participants will be able :
- To inform how narratives can be used to study mental processes empirically.
- Give an overview of how we simulate content in our minds
- To show that even if narrative is not your key research interest, narratives can provide a perfect window onto the mind.
